Metabolic Plasticity is a multidisciplinary network focusing on the optimization
of metabolic health and the prevention of accelerated ageing and chronic disease,
through medically directed and supervised life-style management.
We focus on producing biological data that will facilitate the design of personalized approaches for weight management and diabetes prevention.
People differ in the way they handle energy and the way they process specific nutrients. Individuals respond differently to different forms of exercise. Metabolic analysis helps identifying personal biological characteristics and exploit such differences to design interventions that may optimize individual adaptive responses to exercise training and nutritional management.
Most chronic non-communicable diseases are the result of an unsuitable lifestyle. Humans have evolved to sustain an active lifestyle with limited food supply. Life in our modern societies contrasts our biological design, as daily needs mostly impose hectic and stressful work/family schedules that do not favor physical activity or proper nutritional habits
Life-style management is the principal concern of our multidisciplinary team approach. We focus on creating a meaningful plan that will promote the implementation of the changes that will allow adaptation of a physically active daily schedule.
Medical assessment includes cardiovascular, metabolic and musculoskeletal evaluation that will define safety limits for exercise and will facilitate the design of appropriate progressive training.
Psycho-social evaluation is a distinct component of our approach aiming at increasing our perception of our participants’ needs and opportunity to implement the designed changes within their habitual environment.
We design personalized follow up schedules to monitor the patient’s physical, functional and metabolic improvement dependent on individual goals.
Metabolism is not static; plasticity can be achieved through appropriate stress exposure (e.g. training), nutritional management and suitable long term goals. Identifying small but important differences in metabolic aspects will help tailor exercise and nutritional schemes.
We design progressive traning schemes, tailored to the physical conditioning, exercise capacity and safe limits of individuals. We individualize our approaches based on personal preferences, previous experiences and skills.
We promote art exposure and education, aiming at stress management and at broadening people’s perceptions about a healthy and meaningful life style. We organize experience-creating events to direct people to new areas of interests and we create opportunities for developing team/group coherence.
